A Message From Our CEO …

Dear friends,

I have included below an invite to become an early participant in our Indiegogo crowdfunding health technology campaign, but first I want to introduce myself.

I’ve been an entrepreneur for over 20 years, building eight companies on three continents. Most recently I had been working in the field of preventive medicine, until my daughter became ill. I made it my mission to identify the cause of her mysterious illness and help her get better.

After a year of exploring every possibility with many specialists, we finally discovered that she is very sensitive to gluten and other allergens. The world is slowly shifting towards better food labeling and more choices, but gluten is still prevalent in many foods, often without identification. It was very hard to find foods that would not contribute to my daughter’s illness. I began searching for a product to help me manage her food intake and, from this experience, TellSpec was born.

TellSpec is the world’s first hand-held consumer device that analyzes the nutrients, calories, chemicals and allergens in food products. What exactly are you eating? Do you know? TellSpec can analyze any food, you just aim the handheld scanner at the food, and TellSpec sends a report to your phone. TellSpec is a fast, convenient and simple way to learn what’s in your food.

We are sharing this news with leading doctors, scientists, nutritionists and early-adopters to offer you an opportunity to help bring this breakthrough in health technology to market. By becoming an early contributor in our crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, you can be one of the first to own the device and play an important role in making this powerful tool available to the public; empowering people to make smart choices before they eat.

Please read about our different crowdfunding campaign options on Indiegogo; and if you believe, as we do, that TellSpec will have a positive impact on health, please consider making a contribution.

Thank you for your interest in TellSpec. I hope you will join us in being part of the clean food revolution with inventions such as TellSpec.

Sincerely,

Isabel Hoffmann
Founder and CEO

When you say the device detects allergens, which ones? How many of them? Will it only be pre-programmed common ones like gluten and egg, or will uses be able to configure the device to detect their specific allergen concern(s)?

When TellSpec is released, the information on allergens will cover at least the six most common allergens: gluten, milk, peanut, egg, tree nuts and seafood. TellSpec will then gradually expand its coverage to include all the allergens tested by us and by our beta testers, but users won’t need a new handheld TellSpec to benefit. TellSpec uses a smart learning algorithm that will learn from your use of the device your concerns and interest so you do not need to configure the device.

I’m so excited to have been introduced to your product and look forward to it’s release to the public. I have two questions: 1). Will it work internationally? 2). Do you have any idea when reading MSG will be included? Per your information above, only the six most common items will be in the initial role out. Congratulations on developing the Tellspec unit.

I see you are shipping to over 55 countries, I am assuming that the US is one. My question though is, as the data is transferred to your servers and then back to smart phone, do you know how the international data rates are affected? and are there any limitations in regards to your choice of wireless carrier? Best regards.

Yes U.S is our largest customer pop. Very good question; we do not know the answer to that at this time. As soon as we have the beta prototype units out; we will more than likely create a manual for such elements. Please check back with us in May.

We will be producing only a select group of beta units for our Phase 1 beta food testers in our first shipment. You can certainly buy a unit at http://tellspec.com/preorders/ to be able to receive one of the first production models later this year…this also depends on what you require for quality assessment. If you review our blog here at our website; this will give you a much better idea of what can already be detected and what types of foods we have been compiling in our data banks. The more food scanning the better the detection becomes. So please be patient with us as our technology gets more and more sophisticated across time with larger food geographies and better detection levels.

That’s a very good question. Our food testing and scanning team will have to add that one to the database of possible egg detection objectives. I will have to get back to you on that one.

Okay thank you, my mother has a life threatening allergy to raw egg whites and this would completely change her life if it could detect uncooked egg white in a meal. My email is Rossmvlai@gmail.com if there is a newsletter that I can sign up for and stay updated to see your device will be able to detect raw egg whites.

Thank you Ross. We are keeping our consumers involved through 2 avenues right now. The website blog and also the updates provided on Indiegogo.com. The list of foods and ingredients that the technology can and cannot identify is changing as we speak; so we will update everyone as needed in the next month or so either on the website itself or at Indiegogo. We also expect a more formal Newsletter to be created in about 6 months when we have a clarified trajectory of all our food and ingredient parameters with the help of our beta testers and other testing we will be doing. Thank you for your interest.

I have a very important question. Lets say some product says that it may contain tree nuts… Will the tell spec be able to tell if it does throught the scanning process… Or does it just have items programmed and so if its maybe and not known it wikl not know… Or because it does not have it included and may have traces due to manufacturing errors it wont be able to scan such little contamination. Thanks

WE ARE NOT A MEDICAL device. NO one should depend on TellSpec for DEFINITIVE allergen information. We are a consumer aid in telling you about what’s in your food. Not a scientific medical device. We are working on building the food composition database first. Then proceeding to the additives, allergens etc…so those come in Phase 2 or 3. We will not be able to detect trace amounts Year 1. Thank you so much for the follow and support. Blessing to you and your family!

Thank you for the question. No salmonella identification is not our target variable and that will not be possible in the near future.

      TellSpec Staff says:

No salmonella and any other small trace elements or target variables are not possible to be identified in the near future. We are working on building the food composition database first with macronutrients like calories, carbs, fats, proteins, sugars, adding “gluten” (NOT WHEAT per se) as a target variable and adding other top usda allergens later with more and more food data being compiled slowly. Then we will be adding other additives perhaps in Phase 2 or 3. We will not be able to detect trace amounts of any allergen in Year 1 because the food database has to be crowd sourced to become more accurate and that takes time.

Since TELLSPEC is designed to measure small portions of a target food on a dish at a time, it cannot guarantee the absence of specific molecules in your plate. At this time, TELLSPEC can analyze and tell you the major components of foods and will gradually getting better and better at other food variables.

Thank you so much for the follow and support. Blessing to you and your family!
